Shyamal Sengupta

Sengupta has been associated with India’s top film schools—SRFTI, FTII, and Whistling Woods—in both academic and administrative roles. Earlier, he spent three years with BBC World Service (Radio) in London and worked as a script consultant for organizations like Channel 4, UK. In India, he served as Senior Producer for Business India Television and authored scripts for award-winning fiction films showcased at major international festivals. Additionally, he has consulted on foreign productions, including BBC documentaries, and has been a speaker at numerous national and international seminars.

Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni

“Are short films merely a stepping stone to feature filmmaking, a condensed version of a larger story, or do they stand as a distinct and independent art form? The session explores the creative, emotional, and narrative possibilities of short films, highlighting their ability to experiment, evoke, and convey profound ideas within a limited timeframe, making them a powerful medium of expression.”

Umesh Kulkarni is a celebrated filmmaker known for his significant contributions to Marathi cinema. A graduate of FTII Pune, Kulkarni’s acclaimed short films, including Girni (National Film Award winner), paved the way for his impactful feature films like Valu, Vihir, and Deool. His films have been showcased at prestigious festivals like Berlin and Rotterdam, with Deool earning multiple acclaims. He also fosters a vibrant film culture in his hometown, Pune, by running a short film club that screens both classic and contemporary short films from around the world. In addition, he manages a children’s film club, where acclaimed films for young audiences are showcased, accompanied by interactive sessions with filmmakers, nurturing a love for cinema among the next generation.

Sean McAllister

Acclaimed British documentary filmmaker Sean McAllister exclusively on a self-shooting approach to character-led documentary filmmaking. Known for his vérité style and deeply engaging storytelling, McAllister captures the struggles and resilience of ordinary people caught in political and personal turmoil. A graduate of the National Film and Television School, McAllister’s award-winning works include ‘The Liberace of Baghdad’ (Sundance Jury Prize, 2005) and ‘A Syrian Love Story’ (BAFTA-nominated, 2015). His unique self-shooting approach has brought powerful stories to life, earning global recognition, including directing the Hull City of Culture opening ceremony in 2017.

Shiladitya Bora is the Founder of Platoon One Films, a leading independent film studio in India known for championing innovative storytelling. The studio has backed acclaimed films like Yours Truly (Busan 2018), Picasso (National Award 2021), and Ghaath (Berlinale 2023), while also distributing Sir (Cannes Critics’ Week 2018). With Bayaan, starring Huma Qureshi, in post-production, Platoon One Films continues to foster bold narratives. Expanding globally, its new Platoon One Inc. in Oakland, California, aims to introduce South Asian cinema to wider audiences.
